The Kurt Schwitters: Color and Collage exhibition originating at the Menil Collection and traveling to Princeton and the University of California Berkeley Art Museum includes not only fantastic examples of his collages and assemblages but a life-size recreation of his famed Merzbau, an installation piece avant la lettre. The publication design plays upon the energy-charged artworks and Schwitters’s own magical persona by mirroring the colors and typography found in the collages and incorporating an illustrated chronology complete with family photos. Many of the collages in the catalogue incorporate bits of packaging, newsprint, and fabric that have aged in appearance, some in significant ways, since their creation. Visits to the MoMA and Guggenheim archives allowed for color correction against the originals as they appear today. Capturing this specific aim was a challenge ably met by the Prographics team in Rockford, Illinois. Many thanks to Don Quaintance who collaborated with us on color correction and personally oversaw the printing at Conti Tipocolor in Florence.
